14/15th July

Well I made it out and had a brilliant time. Boy its been a long time but after a choppy exit through the river mouth it turned out not too be so much better in the sea, but 'Sali' did herself proud, her deep V hull slicing down on the wave tops and no slamming which was a favourate with my old Beaves Chamargue.
I made it out to the tower which must be 1.5 to 2 miles out then along to the yellow bouy. It was generally quite choppy with the occasional rougue wave that throw a buckets worth of water in my face - brilliant!
Around 3ish the wind died down and the water nearer to the beach became rather flat so I could stretch Salamis's legs, stopped for a coffee a sandwich only to find a dolphin swimming towards me stationary in the water. It swam under the boat and came along side and dived again. A couple in a Ring 18 stopped up near by and the dolphin swam aroun by both boats.
Needless to say I stayed out dolphin watching too long only to notice the channal wall showing along its whole length. I pulled the leg up to about 10 degrees and slowly pootled in over the bar, but even at this late time I still had 5ft below me, I sure someones dredged a path through that damn bar.
Sorry to go on but I had a great time and its been a while since I've got out.
Some pics - but none I'm afraid of a very camera shy dolphin.

Robbie, I was sitting on the sea wall eating fish and chips as you want by! The boat looked great, and pleased you had a good time today. GF

I have witnesses.
A nice bloke called Mark and very attractive partener who's name I forget at the moment were in a Ring 18 out there dolphin watching with me. They came in at the same time as me, and I told the guy about Pontoontalk so he might be joining soon.
Why are you suggesting that I might be making excuses for comming in too late???
You know I'm always the last to be recovered, and the tractor drivers now have started saying things like - "I know it whan't mike any difference but the last recovery is at 16.30 today Robbie".
Well I'd hate to break old habbits.

Well where else in the world of boating do you have to pack up by 4-30pm and there's still 5 hours of daylight to be had, I mean it would be almost high tide again by then!!!!!!!!

Re: 14/15th July

As I said on an earlier post here, I came back into the harbour at a very late state of tide. I emailed the Harbour Master to see if any dredging has been done. Oh and I mentioned the dolphin. He has replied with a very interesting situation on the bar. And has explained to me how the bloody dolphin got around so quickly and why I couldn't photograph him - there's two of them out there!!!!

Dear Mr Lewis

I am pleased that you have seen the dolphins, there are two at least and they have been off the entrance for the last week. Sorry to say I cannot charge them Harbour Dues, have to put them on next years Dues!!(only joking).

With regards the bar, people donít believe me when I tell them it is a moving entirety and it is a maximum of 0.6m. We check the depth every 4 weeks and prior to large craft movements, if the depth gets above this we would call in Shoreham Harbour who have a tug with a plough on the back to remove the depth.

Many thanks anyway for the pleasant e-mail

Colin Hitchcock

Harbour Master & Manager

Re: 14/15th July

This begs the question then,

Why do they not use the plough to remove bar totally so it takes longer to rebuild

just skimming the top surely is not that worth while

Re: 14/15th July

I wonder whether there has been any change in that huge shingle bank that appeared at just near the harbour entrance opposite the east pier head ?
