Windermere speed limit

I've just been reading that the blind water skier that tried for the speed record actually wrote to the Lakes governing body informing them of his intension to speed on Lake Windermere. This has now become a test case as the speeders are saying the bylaw is an unlawfull restriction. The case is due to be heard soon, and if they win their case there is nothing to stop any boat going as fast as they like on the lake.

Apparently these guys have the support of local business's, I should imagine the ones slowly going bust over the last three years.

Re: Windermere speed limit

Just read that the 10mph speed limit on the lakes imposed by the bylaw was writen up as 10 knots not MPH. So the Lakeland maffia have had to concede that the official speed limit on Windermere is now 11.5MPH. (it's getting there!)

Re: Windermere speed limit

New newsletter:

In a shock move reported by none other than Border Television and amidst claims of a secret meeting between the NPA, Natural England and DEFRA, the NPA are seeking changes in the speed limit due to the loss of revenue! You can see the Border Television report, claims that the "CONTROVERSIAL limit was causing problems ONCE AGAIN" are made.

KWAA are not aware of any such meeting but encourage supporters to spread the word!

Keep Windermere Alive News Update

Dear KWAA supporter;

Your urgent help is required to assist KWAA’s objection to the proposed 2008 Windermere Navigation Byelaws that have recently been submitted to DEFRA for approval. Your help is needed as proof to DEFRA that there are still objections to the 10mph speed limit imposed on Windermere in 2005. KWAA consider that the Lake District National Park Authority should use this opportunity to change the legislation that prevents motorised watersports on Windermere by allowing a management plan to cater for responsible users at speeds greater than 10mph.

We need you to write to the park authorities bosses TODAY(Address below, email not allowed) and register an objection. To assist we have provided a list of reasons, we would ask you to select two and embellish them into your own letter, it need only be 5 lines typed or hand written, ideally don’t cut and paste without making a few changes:

Re: Windermere speed limit

Why can Windermere not be proactively managed in the same way as other National Park waters (Norfolk Broads, Loch Lomond, Poole Harbour) to provide inclusive recreation facilities for all users.
The BMT (British Marine Technology) Formal Safety Assessment found no intolerable risks on the lake prior to the speed limit coming into force in 2005. Why did the National Park Authority refuse to take part in the assessment?
Any public consultation about the amendments to the Byelaws and Lake management has specifically excluded any discussion related to the 10mph speed limit, why is this the case when there is now perfect opportunity to address the perceived issues?
Any Public consultation has been timed to coincide with quite periods (winter) when there are very few lake users in the area.
Year on Year, both pre & post the 10mph speed limit the Lake Patrol Teams annual report no conflict or management issues with lake users. Why were Wardens not allowed to provide evidence to the Public Inquiry in 1996.
It is estimated that Ł8m has been lost to the local economy as a result of the 10mph speed limit, the National Park have a duty to foster the social and economic wellbeing of the local community.
Windermere is one of 22 lakes in the National Park motorised uses, simply want to share one with all other users.
allowing a management plan to cater for responsible users.
Please add your own objections as you feel appropriate, the selection above is only a guide, do not waste time writing a 10 page novel it has only the same weight as 5 lines. Send your letter to the following address to arrive by 3rd November 2008 so you must send it before Friday 30th. Do it, do it NOW

Windermere What Speed Limit ??

I went walking in the Lakes District a couple of weekends ago. On the Sunday was sitting in the sun by the shores of Lake Windermere relaxing for a few hours watching the WAKE BOARDERS !!!!!, oh and the occassional powerboat go passed on the plane... doing at least 15 knots, probably 20-25. Something must be up ......., and they all had the Lafe Regostration number in big letters on the side, so not ill informed visitors !!!
